To reduce noise from electrical noise sources:
- Check cable connections
- Ensure there are no bent pins in the device or cables.
- Securely connect all cables.
- Verify correct Procedure Setup
- Appropriate amplifier inputs are assigned to the channels as verified in the Channel Setup window.
- Appropriate gain and filter settings are being utilized.
- Appropriate sweep speed is being utilized for each acquisition mode.
- Check Electrode Impedance
- Ensure all electrode impedances are below 5k Ohms and are well balanced.
- Ground Amplifiers, Computer and Cart
- Each amplifier requires one ground electrode on the patient. Systems like the Cascade IOMAX, Cascade Elite, and Cascade Pro may have multiple amplifiers, so they require the use of multiple ground electrodes. The ground electrodes should be plugged into the ground jack on the amplifier or pod input. Place one ground electrode on the patient’s head near the evoked potential recording electrodes when needed.
- Note: Do not place any electrodes on or near the ESU ground pad or ESU parts.
- Place the second and/or ground electrode on the patient near the majority of electrodes for that amplifier.
- Cascade bases are provided with a terminal for the connection of a potential equalization conductor. This terminal is intended to be used when the base module is mounted to a metal cart. The main reason for connecting the cart to this terminal is for noise reduction. In accordance with IEC 60601-1:2005, sub-clause 8.6.7, this terminal is not intended to be used as a protective earth terminal.
- Bundle Lead Wires
- Twist electrode lead wires together and bundle them. If you twist and bundle the SSEP electrode leads together, do the same for the EMG leads from the Left leg and Right leg.
- Use short electrode lead wires with the input extender cables for systems that use them.
- Module/Pod Position
- Move modules or pods away from potential noise sources. Even one or two feet can make a difference.
- Moving the electrode lead wires a few inches can also make a difference.
- Power Connection
- Power connection directly to a wall outlet is preferred, avoid the use of power strips or extension cables.
- Use Digital Filters
- Stimulus artifacts can be removed using digital filters.
